'A gripping yarn.' - The Lady
'A passionate saga of the Victorian salt industry with heiress Lydia at the centre of a battle between two young men - one of them her handsome business rival. Cookson fans should check it out.' - Peterborough Evening Telegraph
'Romance, intrigue and documented history combine to produce a richly-rewarding read. Worcestershire born Miss McCabe intertwines real history with a gripping plot...' - Evesham Journal
'A traditional 19th Century saga of dreams and misunderstandings - of a teenaged, newly orphaned heroine with looming responsibilities for the family estate and ailing salt factory; a likely hero (who could be a villain) and likely villain (who could be the hero), both of whom have close connections with a rival salt mill. For those who relish a good, old-fashioned story of romantic suspense.' - The Good Book Guide

Overall I felt that the writing was a little juvenile, as well as the love story. It was a lot of 'I hate you, I hate you, I hate'...then all of a sudden, for no reason at all, I'm madly in love with you. I'm perfectly fine with that change as long as there is some base for that change in feelings. There really wasn't here. Overall, not a bad read, not sure I'd take the time to read it again, but I wouldn't say that it was a complete waste of time.Product details

The Price of Beauty edition by Helen McCabe Romance eBooks Reviews
This was not a romance book. It did not hold my attention. It was long and tedious. I read through 65 percent of the book and finally had to shut it down.
it was so refreshing to have a story with no lude sex scenes. Just pure romance and mystery and villains that get their come upance. I enjoyed it emmencly! I felt happy after reading it, and with all the bad in the world today it was a great place to escape .
It must have been difficult in the Victorian era for someone with both youth and beauty to also be feisty, but Helen McCabe's heroine is no milksop miss. Determined to follow her instincts and heart, Lydia is a match for all that life throws at her. A most enjoyable Victorian romance, well written and plotted. Recommended.
good
I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this book from the description, but I did. With no reviews to sway me I decided to give it a try. I am glad that I did. The book kept me interested to the very end. I didn't want to put it down, because I wanted to see what would happen next. When I wasn't reading it I was thinking about it, and found myself picking it up again for that one more chapter before bed.
Thank you, Helen McCabe, for writing this book. It was very entertaining.
This is a very straight forward romance between Lydia Anessley and Caleb Vyne, who belong to families strongly opposed to one another. The backbone of the book is built on the salt industry and the salt mines. Never I knew that salt mining was such a back breaking job and I thank the author for enlightening me so. In fact I love the statement that 'saltmen are gentlemen'.
This book takes you through their lives and their circumstances juxtaposed against the lives of their owners. None had it easy.
I had tears when I read of Sam Shrike's death, I cried with Sally. It was absolutely wicked of Charles to do what he did.
I wish Lydia wasn't abducted so soon as she starts settling scores, I wished to have seen her do more substantial work in restoring the Works, for me it felt like she had done little and overnight she won her men's favour. I would have loved for her character as a business woman to be etched out. Nice read.
